The Lodge
Sustainability
We are committed to sustainably managing our lodge and property while enabling a safe and healthy environment for all those who visit.
Healthy Soil & Flavourful Nutrition
At Motueka River Lodge we believe that truly flavorful and nutritious food starts with healthy rich soil. Our focus is on cultivating a biodiverse microbiome in soil across the property to furnish healthier plants and ultimately a healthier you. The human microbiome, essential for our cellular, gut, and brain function, stems from food grown from healthy soil. Learn more about the connection between soil and human health through resources like the "Kiss the Ground" and “Common Ground” Netflix movies and regenerative agriculture movements that are critical to transforming our planetary greenhouse gas challenge.
We are obsessed with high organic matter healthy soils across our flower and vegetable gardens, vineyard and fruit trees. Only organic natural and safe fertilizers, compost and mulch are used in how we manage the 16 hectare property in order to grow health giving food that we prepare for our guests and ourselves. Our winegrower and winemaker Abel team do an amazing job at maintaining our Chardonnay vines, maximizing yields and collectively harvesting in April. We are excited to have our own Ngātīmoti label coming soon for guests to enjoy!
Renewable Energy
We improved lodge efficiency by installing a 9 kilowatt (KW) renewable energy solar system with 24 panels installed on the north facing lodge roof, supplied and installed by local company NZ Solar. The solar array generates 13,600 kWh (kilowatt hours) of energy per year equating to 13.6 tons of reduced carbon dioxide (CO2). The solar energy is currently configured to prioritize our hot water heating system.
Solar power is also used to pump and deliver the property’s water from our new well. Water is drawn from ~20m below ground and then pumped to the top of the property approximately 500 meters away where it is stored in multiple water tank reservoirs.
The Purest of Water, Sustainably
We are proud to offer extremely high quality water at the Motueka River Lodge. Although the water is not treated in any way, as a precaution, we have also installed 2 'whole home' water filtration systems. We have the water tested annually with Hill Laboratories in New Zealand. Consequently, lodge guests can enjoy healthy safe water directly from any tap in the lodge or cottage.
Composting & Environmentally Safe Products
We ensure all household food scraps that are compostable are used to break down the organic matter naturally and be used for refueling garden soils. We ensure all cleaning and laundry products are natural and safe for animals & humans but also compatible with our septic tank system to ensure microbial breakdown processes are not compromised.
Motueka Valley History
The lodge is located along the beautiful Motueka river in the bountiful Motueka River valley. Ngātīmoti is the nearest vibrant rural community whose name originates from a Māori boy with the baptismal name of Timothy (Timoti) who once carved the words 'Na Timoti' (belonging to Timothy) on the trunk of a tree. This was taken as the name of the settlement, and settlers later named it Ngātīmoti.
